Now, let’s dive into the world of Paint EZ with JD Mason.
From Paint Store to Franchise CEO: JD’s Journey
JD’s roots in the painting industry run deep. With his father spending 46 years at Sherwin-Williams, JD jokes that painting is the “family business.” He spent his first 13 years in the industry working in a paint store setting, gaining a foundational understanding of the products and the contractors who use them.
Seeking to make his own mark, JD transitioned to another painting franchise where he mentored new owners. This experience was eye-opening. He loved working with franchisees but saw a disconnect between the corporate team’s focus on rapid growth for an exit and the individual support the owners needed.
“When I left and started Paint EZ, it was really with a focus of, you know, having attention to detail with the franchise owners. Let’s make sure… they understand we have their backs the whole way that we’re trying to build alongside them and help them.”
This franchisee-first philosophy has been the cornerstone of Paint EZ’s growth, expanding from 8 locations to over 70 in the last two years.
The Superpowers of Franchising: Collective Thought & True Partnership
JD has come to see two “superpowers” in franchising that drive his leadership style:
- Collective Thought: “All the different owners coming from different walks of life… when you pool collective thought together and really are working together towards long-term goals, there’s some really unique perspective that comes from it if you’re willing to allow it.”
- True Partnership: “How much of a blessing it is to have amazing partners that you link arms with and start growing a business… versus counting them as a number.”
This approach of treating franchisees as true partners, not just numbers, fosters a culture of collaboration and mutual success.
Differentiating Through Support: The Paint EZ Model
In a crowded home services market, JD believes Paint EZ’s key differentiator is its unparalleled support system, starting with the leadership team. His team brings diverse expertise – from technology and leadership development to deep franchise and paint industry experience.
A cornerstone of their support is Launch Week:
“From day one… we’ve always went out to their market for what we call launch week. And we’re actually going on sales calls with ’em. We’re helping them recruit the labor… getting the introductions made on a local level… that just helps get the business started on a lot, you know, firmer foundation.”
This hands-on, in-market training bridges the gap between learning in a classroom and applying it in the real world. It provides new owners with immediate momentum and the confidence that the franchisor is truly invested in their success from day one. This is followed by daily conversations for 60 days, ensuring no franchisee feels like they’re left to sink or swim.
Innovation and Technology: Staying Ahead of the Curve
While the act of painting has remained largely the same, JD recognizes that technology is transforming the industry. Paint EZ embraces innovation as a core value.
“What’s changing though? The buying behavior of Candidateele, the way you market to a Candidate and just the use of technology in our everyday lives. And so we feel that we have to continue to keep evolving from a technology standpoint to lead from the front versus following from the back.”
They are leveraging different AI technologies for Candidate acquisition and nurturing, and their CRM is a central part of their process. This commitment to technology ensures that franchisees have the modern tools they need to operate efficiently and effectively.
Giving Back: The Heart of Paint EZ – Rooms for Hope
One of the most inspiring aspects of our conversation was learning about Paint EZ’s commitment to community impact through their Rooms for Hope initiative.
As a cancer survivor himself, JD was moved by the struggles he witnessed in others. This led to the creation of Rooms for Hope four years ago.
“A portion of proceeds of projects that we do go back to us painting rooms free of charge for people dealing with cancer to create that room for hope or peace as they’re going through that cancer battle… It’s truly been one of the most humbling things that I’ve ever been able to be a part of. It’s also one of the most rewarding things.”
This initiative, embraced by both the corporate team and franchisees, demonstrates a deep commitment to giving back and adds a powerful layer of purpose to the business.
JD’s Advice for Aspiring Entrepreneurs: Mindset and Action
For the many corporate executives listening who are contemplating a move to business ownership, JD’s advice was clear and powerful:
- Start with a Mindset Shift: “The mindset changes so drastically when we’re in corporate America… with business ownership, we might be starting to look at a 10 or 15 year plan or vision.” Shift your focus from short-term goals and a steady paycheck to long-term value creation and reinvesting in your business.
- Take Action: “It takes action… every successful entrepreneur I’ve either listened to on a podcast or read a book or met in person. They just started and then they stuck with it until they became successful.” Don’t let paralysis by analysis hold you back. Start the process, do the research, and take the next step.
Final Thoughts
JD Mason and Paint EZ exemplify what a modern, supportive, and purpose-driven franchise can be. Their focus on franchisee partnership, hands-on launch support, technological innovation, and genuine community impact sets a high bar.
His journey reminds us that the “why” behind your business is just as important as the “what.” When you align a strong business model with a powerful purpose and a supportive culture, you create something truly special.
If you’re looking for a franchise business opportunity that offers more than just a financial return, Paint EZ is a brand worth getting to know.
